If you like a variety of flavors, but with a more subtle approach: The L.A. In our latest test, we found that when it came to flavor and texture, these chocolates were outclassed by our current picks. And the packaging, reminiscent of brown pebbled leather, is luxurious but understated. ![]() The fillings are chocolate-heavy, and they don’t range beyond pralines and a couple of fruit-infused ganaches. If you’re looking for an upscale but conservative box: La Maison du Chocolat’s Coffret Maison Dark and Milk Chocolate offering was a previous pick for anyone seeking a premium yet tame chocolate selection. And it was entirely unlike the Ambanja, Madagascar truffle, which sang with the promised essence of pineapple. The Maya Mountain, Belize truffle was indeed bright and fruity, with prominent strawberry flavor. Our panelists found the chocolates to be true to their descriptions, sometimes uncannily so. One might wonder how much the power of suggestion dictates the experience (does the Maya Mountain, Belize bonbon really have notes of “European drinking chocolate and strawberry coulis”?), but the proof was in the fillings. A pamphlet supplies evocative characterizations of each one, complete with harvest date. Though these truffles are all ostensibly the same flavor (chocolate), what’s remarkable is that they taste discernibly different. Each bonbon is a uniform, Brutalist cube filled with ganache made with chocolate sourced from one of five distinct locales, from Madagascar to Belize (a bonbon’s coating is the same single-origin chocolate as the filling). If the exposure value is greater than 0.5 µg/day for lead or greater than 4.1 µg/day for cadmium, the box will be red.Why they’re great: It only makes sense that one of America’s premier bean-to-bar chocolatiers would put out outstanding truffles that showcase the nuances of single-origin chocolate. If the exposure value is below or equal to 0.5 µg/day for lead or below 4.1 µg/day of cadmium, the value will be green. The results in this chocolate tracker are colored red or green depending on whether they are above or below the MADLs set for lead and cadmium. The State of California has established Maximum Allowable Dose Levels (MADLs) for chemicals causing reproductive toxicity, including lead and cadmium. The table below shows the company, product, date of testing, and the exposure levels of lead and/or cadmium found in each sampled chocolate product, shown in micrograms per serving (µg/serving). All testing has been performed at independent, state-certified laboratories. Since 2014, As You Sow has been testing chocolate products offered for sale in California to assess levels of lead and cadmium in such products. In the meantime, we’ve updated our testing of chocolates for lead and cadmium. The results from the expert committee are available. In partnership with As You Sow, 31 chocolate companies, including Cargill, Hershey, Mars, and Nestle, committed to funding an independent expert committee to investigate the sources of lead and cadmium in chocolate, find feasible measures to lower levels of these metals, and evaluate and recommend the lead and cadmium concentration levels in chocolate that trigger Proposition 65 warnings. In 2018, our legal efforts culminated in a first-of-its-kind settlement with the world’s largest chocolate companies. Based on the results of our testing, which found 285 of the 469 chocolate products tested contain lead and/or cadmium above California’s MADLs, we filed legal notices with over 20 companies, including Trader Joe’s, Hershey’s, Mondelēz, Lindt, Whole Foods, Kroger, Godiva, See’s Candies, Mars, Theo Chocolate, Equal Exchange, Ghirardelli, and Chocolove, for failing to warn consumers that their chocolate products contain cadmium or lead, or both. Children are more susceptible than adults to exposure from low doses of cadmium over time.Īs You Sow has conducted independent laboratory testing of over 469 chocolate products for lead and cadmium. Cadmium can cause damage to the kidney, liver, and bones, while also impairing neurobehavioral development. Cadmium is also known to cause reproductive harm.
